Lecture Theatres

Purpose

Lecture theatres are large-capacity teaching spaces designed to support formal presentations, lectures, seminars and other instructor-led learning activities. These spaces should provide clear sightlines, excellent acoustics and integrated technology to ensure effective communication between presenters and students. Lecture theatres should deliver a comfortable, inclusive and engaging learning environment while supporting contemporary teaching methods and a consistent, high-quality learning experience across USP campuses

 

Design Objectives

Lecture theatres should:

• Support effective delivery of lectures, presentations and large-group teaching activities.

• Provide unobstructed sightlines to the lecturer, teaching surfaces and presentation screens from all seating positions.

• Incorporate high-quality audio-visual and information technology systems to support in-person, hybrid and recorded learning.

• Ensure excellent acoustics and speech intelligibility throughout the space.

• Provide comfortable seating with appropriate writing surfaces where required.

• Ensure accessibility and inclusivity for all users, including access to seating, presentation areas and teaching technologies.

• Provide suitable lighting controls that support note-taking, presentations and audio-visual displays.

• Maintain comfortable thermal, ventilation and indoor environmental conditions for large occupancies.

• Use durable, maintainable and sustainable materials suitable for high-use educational facilities.

• Allow for future upgrades to teaching technologies and evolving learning requirements
