Private Offices

Purpose

Private offices provide enclosed workplace environments for academic, administrative and professional staff whose roles require privacy, confidentiality, concentrated work, frequent meetings, or specialized operational functions. These spaces should support individual productivity while maintaining appropriate connections to the broader workplace environment. Private offices should be provided based on functional requirements and operational needs, rather than position title alone.

Design Objectives

Private offices should:

  • Provide a comfortable, functional and professional workspace that supports focused work and day-to-day operational activities.

  • Accommodate confidential discussions, meetings and sensitive work activities where required.

  • Support academic, administrative and professional functions through appropriate furniture, storage and technology provisions.

  • Provide equitable access to natural light, ventilation and views wherever practicable.

  • Incorporate suitable information and communication technology infrastructure to support in-person and virtual collaboration.

  • Maintain appropriate acoustic separation and speech privacy from adjacent spaces.

  • Ensure accessibility and inclusivity for all users.

  • Use durable, maintainable and sustainable materials suitable for long-term workplace use.

  • Promote staff wellbeing through appropriate lighting, thermal comfort and indoor environmental quality.

  • Allow flexibility to accommodate evolving organizational requirements and workplace practices.
